Dancer makes a dash for nearest exit

The dutch mare became trapped in her horsebox in the mid-morning of Sunday 12 July as she tried to escape through the groom door.

Gemma Bower, Dancer’s owner, discovered the horse with one of her forelegs suspended over the restraining bar from when she had reared earlier felt in her horsebox on the way to Crofton Manor near Fareham.

Dancer, determined to succeed in her athletic escape, proceeded to get her other foreleg and head over the restraining bar and through the groom door before getting stuck at the pelvis, where it was just her size that held her from the reaches of freedom.

Animal rescue specialist, Anton Phillips was assisted by fire crews and a vet who were subsequently called to the scene. Using a hydraulic ram to split the door wide open so the animal was freed rewarded with a decent-size sugar cube for her gymnastic feat.

Dancer is use to being towed in a horse trailer and neither the animal rescue specialist or her owner could explain why she panicked in such a way. Despite the horse injuries to her head, flanks and hindquarters sustained during her panic, Dancer is expected to make a full recovery.
