Derby winner handed one-day ban for improper whip use
This year's Derby winning jockey, 19-year-old Mickael Barzalona, faced a summons in front of the stewards following his successful ride for improper use of the whip.
Horse insurance owners have been told that Mr Barzalona was reprimanded after he stood up in the saddle on Pour Moi waving his whip two strides before finishing the race.
The young Frenchman has done this before, but following his actions at the Derby has received a one-day ban to deter this type of behaviour in the future.
Mr Barzalona won the race on Saturday and his horse became the first French-trained winner of the event since 1976.
He said: "It’s fantastic, absolutely amazing. It took Frankie Dettori 15 years to win the race and I’ve done it on my first ride."
Jump jockey Jason Maguire has been at the centre of continuing controversy recently about his riding style and overuse of the whip, which was highlighted during the John Smith's Grand National in April when he rode Ballabriggs.
