Equine insurance: Horse power used in conservation project

Equine insurance policyholders have been told about a conservation project which is using horse-power, as opposed to mechanical muscle, to protect woodland for a rare butterfly.

Ardennes horses, which are known for their hulking stature and power as working animals, have been used to clear timber from woodland at Ryton Wood, which is part of Ryton Pools Country Park.

By using the mounts, the superfluous debris has been cleared with a minimum amount of damage to the surrounding soil and vegetation and an environment has been created in which the wood white butterfly can thrive.

Project officer Eddie Asbery said: "We are really pleased with the outcomes of the project and hope our efforts will mean numbers of the wood white butterfly will be up this summer and in future years. The level of participation in the project has been fantastic."

The project was funded with a grant of £5000 from Carillion's Natural Habitat Fund and has been used to clear 0.7 hectares of land over two months.
