Grandfather dealt crushing blow by bolting horse

The Castlewellan Agricultural Show in Ireland last Saturday bore witness to the death of the much-loved grandfather, Wesley McNeill, as a runaway horse bolted and collided with the man of 89.

Despite his age, his daughter Hazel, explained that McNeill was a 'spritely' man with the energy of a sixty year old and that the circumstances of his death could be construed as ironic, for her father had been a retired farmer with a lingering passion for horses.

She had been on her way to meet her father with her family for an exciting day out, when she received news of her father's accident via a neighbour.

It has been reported that the runaway horse had been practicing for the hunter class as part of the competition hosted by the Castlewellan Agricultural Show with its rider, when it bolted over the fence. Numerous people had made considerable efforts to calm and retrieve the horse for several minutes, when it delivered McNeill with a fatal blow.

The St John's Ambulance and onsite Doctor were at the scene immediately before paramedics arrived, but McNeil had passed away before reaching the hospital.

The community mourns the loss of a member of the Ballywillwill Gospel Hall, where McNeill played an active role in the congregation and his death served a terrible blow to both family and friends alike.
