Henry the horse rescued from lake

A horse has been rescued by firefighters from a frozen river in Halkirk after the animal had stepped onto the frozen water. The fire crews used a digger to break a path through the ice down the River Thurso in order to free the stranded horse.

The horse known as Henry by its owner was pulled to safety using an assortment of slings and lines to pull the animal 5 meters to the riverbank. A local vet had been called in to check the animal once it was safe as a precaution.

The call was made to emergency services at around 4pm on Saturday and fire crews had rescued the horse from the 10cm thick ice after an hours work.

This rescue is among many that fire crews have had to make over the past month. The weather conditions have caused rivers and lakes to freeze in places causing a major hazard to people and animals.
