Horse insurance: Foal rescued after being abandoned

Horse insurance policyholders have been told of a case involving a foal which was abandoned by its mother on a hillside in South Wales.

The animal, which has since been named Oliver, was taken in by Lluest Horse and Pony Trust and has been given medical attention since the rescue.

Trust manager Emma Kurrels said that Oliver is still very fragile and staff are taking it "hour by hour" in assessing his needs and prognosis.

"We are currently full up with other needy horses and ponies but when Oliver came to us we sprang into action to keep him alive," she explained.

Ms Kurrels said the foal "is just one of many equines being abandoned at the moment" and blamed "overbreeding by irresponsible owners" for the rising number of unwanted animals, as they are considered "worthless" to dealers.

Earlier this year, the Belfast Telegraph reported that rates of abandoned animals in Northern Ireland are reaching crisis point.
