Horse insurance: Radical therapy 'helps autistic children'

Horse insurance policyholders may be interested to hear that "radical" horse therapy is being used in Teesdale to help autistic children.

The Teesdale Mercury reported that Sarah Tubbs had been teaching riding at Marwood Equestrian centre in the town, but was inspired by the book The Horse Boy to explore the way in which animal therapy could help youngsters with the condition.

Ms Tubbs found a course in Gloucester which taught the principles of equestrian therapy and decided to learn the skills to take back to her own riding school.

"The methods involve all kinds of different things you can do with horses and autistic children, including sensory work, academic work, speech skills and mathematics," she explained.

She added: "I'd say to any parent to just give it a go."

Earlier this month, the Portsmouth News reported that a riding school which runs free sessions for disabled and vulnerable children may be forced to euthanise the animals if they are unable to find new land.
