Horse insurance: Riding groups oppose forestry plans

Horse insurance policyholders have been told that around 50 riders from East Anglia have protested the government's plans to sell off parts of the English public forestry network.

The East Anglian Daily Times reported that members of the county's equestrian community, who belong to three different riding groups, joined together to campaign at Kings Forest, just outside Bury St Edmunds.

Elizabeth Barrett, chair of Camino Riders, said: "I think it [the proposal] is very short-sighted and the implications are [that] it's very unlikely horse riders will be allowed in the forests as we have no statutory rights like walkers."

Campaign co-ordinator Jan Harber, who brought together the riders from Ms Barrett's group, Endurance GB Iceni Group and Anglian Distance Riders, said she was pleased with the turnout and support for the issue, which is "just so important, not just in East Anglia, but all over England".

Last month, the Daily Telegraph reported that the government's proposal to sell the public land could leave around 15 per cent of England's woodland estate with no guaranteed access arrangements.
