Horse insurance: Sanctuary owners banned from keeping animals

Horse insurance policyholders have been told that a sanctuary-running mother and daughter were "cruel by being kind", resulting in them being banned from keeping equine animals for five years.

The Lincolnshire Echo reported that Vennessa and Charlotte Malone were found guilty of the mistreatment of four mounts at Silver Florin Equine Welfare charity.

Financial difficulties experienced by the 46 and 22-year-old animal carers resulted in medical conditions experienced by the horses being overlooked and untreated, as well as problems of malnutrition.

Lincolnshire Magistrates' Court heard that despite the animals suffering from lice, wasted muscles and sores, vets were not called into the sanctuary.

Ruling on the case, district judge Richard Blake said of the Malones, of New Cemetery Lodge, Washingborough Road, Lincoln: "This is not a case of people being deliberately cruel. They were being cruel by being kind. They took too much on at a difficult time."

The mother and daughter pair can apply for their animal keeping ban to be lifted after three years.

Earlier this month, Abbie May, 23, from Crediton, and Rebbecca Warren, 26, from Nadderwater, were banned from keeping horses for 12 months, after neglecting a foal in their care.
