Horse obesity is a little known danger
Research into horse obesity has revealed that UK horse owners are failing to realise the dangers that come as a result of this. A survey of UK animal lovers revealed that a majority of people that were asked if they could identify horse obesity would fail to do so and that they had no idea of the health risks it would cause. Another figure released showed that around 45% of horses in the UK are overweight, which is a worrying figure for the World Horse Welfare (WHW).
Perhaps owners are also unaware of the penalties that come from neglect and mistreating a horse can bring. A couple from Blackpool were banned for life from keeping horses and handed a fine of £500 each after their Shetland pony was found to be 10 stone overweight weighing in at a monstrous 40 stone.
Chief executive of WHW, Roly Owers said: "Despite widespread media coverage of both human and pet obesity, we appear as a nation to be blind to this issue."
