Horse thieves on the prowl
A burglary in Llandybie on November 17th has caused police to issue a warning to all horse owners across the UK to be on the look out for potential horse thieves. The burglary is suspected to have been carried out by professional thieves, who had also taken saddles and other horse riding equipment.
Police believe that the horse thieves are visiting the chosen premises identifying horses to be stolen and then returning on a later date to carry out the theft. An incident that occurred in Powys last year saw a thief attach a metal plate to a horse in the day and then returning in the night to steal the marked animal.
Horse owners must increase security during these winter months, as longer nights make it easier for thieves. This can be done by purchasing security lighting were a thief will be lit up if they attempt to steal a horse. Another way that horse owners can ensure that they do not loose their animals is by photographing all areas of the horse and by identifying any unusual features, which will later allow for easy identification.
