Martini's increase equine speed

The Martini in the title is not the popular alcoholic beverage favoured by Bond enthusiasts and cocktail drinkers alike, instead it refers to a new equine survey which has proven that the favoured sporting position taken up by jockeys does indeed boost riding speeds.

Although horses may be elegant and sophisticated racing animals, they do suffer a running hindrance. As horses race they continually have to accelerate and decelerate and withstand the rising jump and fall of each stride which consumes valuable energy.

The famous Martini glass posture of the jockey has been proven by Royal Veterinary College in London to counterbalance the movement of the horses by holding a steady position relieving the horse's efforts to move the weight of its rider.

In fact it has even been suggested that horses ride better saddled rather than unsaddled, dramatically improving race times. The study, that connected inert sensors to riders and horses during training, measured that horses averaged an improvement of nearly 11 seconds with the Martini hold.
