Massacre of horses may be imminent
The recession may cause a massacre of innocent horses this winter as owners decide to shoot their animals, as they can no longer afford to keep them. All across the country animal centres have been inundated with calls from horse owners asking if they can take their beloved horses, as they con no longer afford the bills. Unfortunately the sanctuaries cannot cope with the shear numbers of animals they are taking, the owners of the horses simply shoot them instead.
The Horse Trust has simply had to shut its doors, as it can no longer cope with the amount of new arrivals. Last year saw just 20 calls a month from horse owners looking for a re-home, but in the last few weeks the numbers have risen to around 10 calls a day.
Paul Jepson chief executive of the trust said: "Owners simply can't find anyone who is willing to take on an older horse, so euthanasia is often the only option they have."
