Pair found guilty of ill treatment to horses
The first case over an obese horse has gone to court, finding a Lancashire couple guilty for the ill treatment of their Shetland pony, Dale.
The couple, who also had another Shetland pony April, were found guilty of allowing Dale to become grossly overweight and April's hooves had overgrown so much she was unable to walk properly and in a lot of pain. The pair were found guilty on the charges of cruelty to the horses and banned from keeping animals for five years, they were also charged with costs of £500.
World Horse Welfare have taken over the care of Dale, a 12 year old stallion, who will provide him with a nutritious diet to get him back down to a recommended weight. Unfortunately April, a 21 year old mare had to be put to sleep to free her of the pain.
