RSPCA rescues horse from slurry
Fire fighters were joined by officers from the RSPCA in a battle to free a trapped horse who had become stuck in a slurry pit on Wednesday morning 25 August.
The fire service was alerted of the animal's distress by a fisherman who spotted the struggling animal in the lake near Wislea Cresent in Colney Heath. It is unknown how long the animal became stuck in the mud but investigators suspect that the horse had been taking a drink when the bank underneath him had collapsed.
The horse had managed to keep its head above the water level, however was rapidly losing energy when the fire service and Rescue Support Unit arrived.
The fire service from Welwyn Garden city assisted by members of the RSPCA constructed a series of levers and pulleys to harness the horse from the slurry pit. Fire fighters garbed in dry suits supported the horse's head as the animal was freed.
In total it took seven fire fighters to rescue the animal. The horse, whose owner is currently unknown, was left in the care of the RSPCA where it will receive treatment from a vet after it collapsed on the banks after its rescue.
