Round up commences in Nevada

The wild horse has long been the treasured icon of the American wild west and the animal still plays an important role in everyday life for the people of Nevada. However the 30,000 wild mustangs, descendants of the horse of the Spanish conquistadors, are now proving to be a problem for the local habitat in Nevada.

A solution to the problem has been posed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) who suggest rounding up over 2,000 wild horses and physically transporting them away from their natural habitat in Nevada.

This plan has posed outrage to many inhabitants in the state let alone across the US, several famous faces have also lent their voices to the cause against this animal deportation including Viggo Mortensen and Sheryl Crow who have publicly written to the President and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

However despite public protestations the BLM have commenced the round-up on private land over 1,750 square miles in the Calico Mountains Complex, 100 miles north of Reno which will last over two-months.

A spokesman from the BLM said that they did not know how many horses had currently been rounded up but once finished they would then be transported for veterinary care and some would be up for adoption.

Activists still worry for the safety of the animals as often these round-ups can have detrimental effects on the horses including broken legs, separation from young and mental scarring. Plus the removal of animals, who by law cannot be lead to slaughter, from their natural habitat is nothing short of barbaric.

Insure My Horse provides horse insurance for multiple different equine animals incorporating care for specialist equipment and vehicles.
