Horse first aid kit
First aid kits should be kept easily accessible, properly stocked for equine and human needs and be kept up to date.
Basic items for an equine kit should include:
- Thermometer and lubricant such as petroleum jelly
- Stethoscope to listen for heartbeat, respiration and gut sounds
- Sharp clean scissors
- Wire cutters, to free an entangled horse
- Clean bucket for washing out wounds
- Gauze for dabbing wounds
- Syringe for cleaning wounds, without the needle. Preferred to cleaning with cotton or gauze
- Sterile saline solution to clean wounds with
- Latex gloves to prevent cross contamination
- Antibacterial soap
- Epsom salts
- Sterile wound dressing and bandages
- Adhesive tape to keep bandages and dressings in place
- Veterinary medications, horse specific with correct dosage instructions
- Probably most important, Vet’s and farriers contact telephone numbers in case of emergency
- Paper and pencil to write down symptoms and veterinary instructions
- Incase a vet cannot be contacted immediately, a veterinary emergency handbook
- And a suitable box/container to keep all of the above clean and tidy
